Right now, there is a grace period for filing e-manifests at border cargo facilities. That’s a good thing because so far only half the manifests are filed electronically in El Paso, Laredo and other locations along the border, in spite of the fact that the practice was made mandatory in April. But this will change soon. Beginning June 19, Customs and Border Protection will deny a permit to proceed into the U.S. to any carrier not complying with the paperless program. A month later, those who make no attempt to comply with requirements will be fined.
“It is imperative that companies start filing at a higher rate as the deadlines approach,” said Roger Maier, CBP spokesman in El Paso.
Maier also said that error rates remained high on the electronic filings.
