Sounds like a title for a soap opera, or in Spanish, a novella, doesn’t it. But I refer to the fact that we can probably count on the border being open on September 1
With that in mind, it might be the time to review a few things.
1. These drivers participating in this program probably don’t want to be here any more than some of you want them here. Take a moment if the opportunity happens, to get to know these guys, and possibly ladies. You’ll be better off for it.
2. You’ll notice the rigs they’re driving are probably better than yours. That will be a surprise to some.
3. If they need some help or you think they do, offer to help. It will be appreciated and a little courtesy never hurt anyone.
4. Keep in mind these people are professionals, the same as us. There is no difference. They have the same skills as we do and for the most part, have operated in conditions most of us would be lost in. And they are proud of their country and of what they do. Respect that.
5. They are not up here to take our jobs, our customers or anything else. For the most part, you will not know they exist. Keep in mind that the Mexican driver you have come in contact with in the past is usually a Mexican-American. The Mexican driver comes from a culture totally different from these other guys.
6. And for those of you who have threatened to “take the roads back” from these guys through acts of violence towards them or acts of vandalism to their equipment. A word to the wise; DON’T. The same laws that protect you protect them.
I could go on, but you get the drift. Treat these folks as you want to be treated and I imagine you’ll be pleasantly surprised at the response you receive. Treat them in a rude or disrespectful manner and you’ll be ignored and dismissed as the fool you are.
What next for the Mexican trucks
