As a driver, I am certainly aggravated with some truck stops because of the cleanliness of they showers. I went into a large truck stop last week, which will remain nameless but the name sounds like “Pie Lot” to take a shower. The people were very nice in the beginning and smiled from ear to ear when I was greeted at the fuel desk. The young man there said that I would have to wait for a shower due to there being a long line of people needing one.
I waited more than 20 minutes before getting a shower key and when I went into the shower room, I was disgusted by what I saw. When I first go into a truck stop shower, I look at the sink and shower stall before I do anything else. Inside this shower stall I noticed white soap residue all over the floor and on the walls. Also, I looked closer and saw black and green mold growing between the tiles and in the corners.
Then, I looked in the sink and noticed small hairs all over the sink from what looked like someones facial hair. I then looked at the toilet! It was then I became angry because I could see urine spots all over the toilet seat. I went back to the fuel desk to inform the manager about the problems with the shower and she said, “Our maintenance guys are very busy and sometimes they have to cut corners in order to provide faster service”. I told her that I was not taking a shower in that nasty room and could someone please clean it. I could tell she had gotten aggravated, but never the less she made one of her guys go clean the shower room.
As Truck drivers, we have certain expectations of truck stops and their facilities. Truckers are simple minded people by large and it doesn’t take a whole lot to make a driver happy when it comes to truck stops. However, we are also human and we want to be treated like humans and not animals. We expect good food, fast and reliable service from truck stop employees and clean showers every time we take one. After all, truck stops earn a lot of revenue from truckers using their services. There are no excuses to these services being neglected by truck stop staff considering good service is what brings in their business.
So, if you notice that your shower is in horrible shape and needs to be cleaned, do not hesitate to tell a manager. Dirty showers can cause a number of infections and viruses. I have talked to drivers that have received athlete’s foot, yeast infections, skin rashes and all kinds of other things. I know it can’t be proved that these infections were caused by a dirty shower, but it is a possibility especially, when the drivers had never had such infections until they used an unclean shower facility.

Uhh, I used to have pictures, well they are on my blog in a post from a good while ago, but they are of a shower I used that was filthy. I took toilet paper and used it to scrape the shower wall with it. It was Horrible!
Good post Jason.
Another thing you can do is call the county health department and chances are good they will send an inspector out there.
This has long been a pet peeve of mine also. Back in the day when I was staying on the road for a month or more at a time, and had no choice, I’d take a quart bottle of CLOROX in with me. This was before the day of all the spray and go shower cleaners on the market.
Nowadays, I am on the road four or five days and no longer have need for these facilities. If I layover, I’m in a motel but otherwise, a good ol ho’s bath keeps me presentable until I return home. And an electric razor is essential on the road today.
