I read a LOT, like some people like to watch TV , I like to read. If I’m not doing something that I can NOT be reading while doing it (like driving, sleeping or taking a shower) and I’m alone (sitting by myself at a table in a crowded restaurant is “alone”) , then I’m reading. I usually read while I eat. I read on my computer(s). A PDA (Palm Tungsten) is a computer as is a SmartPhone (Blackberry Curve) It’s easier to carry a hundred or so e-books on a SDCard for a PDA or smartphone or even on a hard drive on the laptop than it is in the paper version. Can you imagine how much room a thousand books, even paperbacks, would take up?
I can. I have a couple of thousand in the library at the house. But I have even more ebooks on my computers. If not actually ON them then I can get them easily enough.
An infinite amount. If not infinite then many more than I can ever read, which comes to the same thing….for me. They’re available on the internet. Many of them are free. Many, many of them.
When I’m not surfing the net on my laptop I’m reading an E-book on it. EBook as you may have guessed is short for Electronic Books. They’re actual just computer files. Rather small files.
My favorites are from Baen Books
Baen makes some of their books available for free but most they sell. Baen’s idea is to get you “hooked” on the freebies and then you come back for more. It worked on me. Five dollars a book or so. No DRM. (digital rights management…. I avoid anything with DRM), encryption in other words.
There is also Project Gutenberg
Project Gutenberg’s goal is to make available in digital format all public domain literature. They’ve come a loooooooooong way. Thousands and thousands of volumes. (anything printed prior to the early 1900’s is public domain. A lot after that time is also) All of classic literature, like Tarzan, is free.
There are other sites that provide free ebooks. Manybooks, and Free E-books are but two. Remember, in this as in many other endeavors involving computers and the internet…. Google is your friend.
