One of the reasons I don’t travel much on I70 is Illinois, Indiana and Ohio. Indiana has changed it’s speed limit to be 65 in most of the state, there are still parts where it’s 60. Ohio has had a few attempts to equalize the truck and car speed limits with no success. Illinois is trying their hand at it -

65 mph truck limit may stand
SPRINGFIELD | Gov vows veto, but override is likely

Truck drivers would be permitted to drive 65 mph on highways outside of Chicago under a bill that has passed the General Assembly but faces stiff opposition from Gov. Blagojevich and highway safety groups.
But the measure passed the House and the Senate with a veto-proof majority, which may mean the law could go into effect next January.
The governor has vetoed previous attempts to have a uniform speed limit for cars and trucks, saying it would increase the number of traffic fatalities because trucks would take longer to stop when traveling at higher speeds.
“[Passing] this bill would result in people dying,” said state Sen. John Cullerton (D-Chicago).
Supporters of the bill argue that it would be safer to have cars and trucks traveling at the same speed, to prevent cars from weaving in and out of slower-moving traffic.

Lookout! People are doing to die if trucks drive 10 mph faster!!!

If making trucks slower than cars was about safety then every state would do it. It’s not about safety, it’s about income. One of the extreme cases is California, 55mph for trucks, 70mph for cars. Actually, it’s 55 for anyone towing a trailer, but on Friday and Sunday afternoons, pickups towing boats, bikes and ATVs are driving 80 in the fast lane like everyone else. But trucks are the ones that get pulled over.

Higher speed limits don’t kill, excessive speed over the legal limit kills in construction zones, school zones, in bad weather and other conditions. Unsafe driving whether it’s speeding, tailgating or just driving like an idiot, kills.

When I first saw this headline I was worried -

Wyoming to test variable speed limits
The state of Wyoming is hoping to introduce a first-of-its-kind speed limit system on its interstates.
It’s called a “variable speed limit,” with the speed limit changing in response to weather and road conditions.
Wyoming currently has a uniform speed limit for trucks and cars – and that won’t change.
But in heavy rain or snow, digital speed limit signs will slow all traffic down, and speed it back up when conditions permit.
…there will be a pilot program this winter on a six-mile stretch of Interstate 80 between Rawlins and Laramie.

My best guess would be that’s it’s going to be the area around Elk Mountain. One of the worse areas on I-80 during the winter.

That’s a good idea with good intentions but, people have to obey the posted speed limit for this to work. For those that drive too fast out of ignorance, this might help. For those that drive too fast out of stupidity or arrogance, not so much.
