You know about using Google’s SMS service from Ben’s very informative post. How else can you use Google on your phone? Google 411. Google’s free 411 service integrates a normal 411 service with SMS. Dial 800-GOOG-411 (800-466-4411), say the city name or press the zip code (get zip codes from your truck stop book) and either the business name or category you want to look for.
You will be read a list of names and you choose which one you want Google to dial for you. Say, “Detail” and it immediately sends a text message to your phone with the phone number and address and a link to click on (if you can) that takes you to a google map. Or say, “map it” and it will send you a map of the area.
Except for normal cell, text and data (for maps) charges from your carrier, Google 411 is totally free, even when they connect you to the business you requested. I don’t know about anyone else, but I always want the address of the place I’m calling so I can map it, and a text message with the phone number and the address saves the hassle of getting a pen and paper, especially if you’re driving and Google even sends the map. (I need to upgrade my phone)! And I always hated paying extra for 411 to connect the call. This is an incredible FREE service for people that spend their days on the road.
The video is worth watching, it’s a quick tutorial, but it’s really easy to figure out. Here’s the tutorial page. Check out Google’s other mobile services here.
