I thought I would wait till everyone woke up from their turkey coma before we started a few posts about truckers health. This is such a big subject (sorry! couldn’t help it), that we’ve gone from Trick My Truck to Trick My Trucker on CMT. If you’re not familiar with the show, each 30 minute episode, they take a trucker and give him a personal trainer and a stylist. Showing them how to exercise and eat right, even at truck stops. I’m not sure what the stylist is for, but I could guess.
I’m definitely not the healthiest trucker out here but I’ve got a few ideas of what works and what doesn’t and I’m always open for new ideas. Feel free to leave ideas and what you do in the comments.
The Truck Gym. I’m pretty sure this thing wouldn’t work for me. Part of any exercise is getting my fat butt out of the truck.
I seem to remember Pilot starting a gym at certain locations. I know there was one at the Pilot in Oklahoma City, but it looks like they didn’t get much response from it. Like most gym memberships a lot of them go unused. I don’t know for sure, but a room full of gym equipment needs to be maintained, if it’s not no one is going to go back.
I do want to go over some of the things that are available for truckers to get some exercise. It’s easy to walk around the truck stop, but sometimes it’s a little dangerous. There are some truck stops that are starting to put in walking paths and there are a few places that are “informal” walking paths and are safe to walk around and I’ll point out the ones I’ve found.
And no more buffets till Christmas!

The Petro started a work out program about 5 or 6 years ago. It too, did not last. I went into the one at the Atlanta petro one day thinking that I would start using those gyms and some other MALE trucker tried to pick me up! So much for my working out on the road huh? That ended it for me right then and there.
One thing on the CMT shows about truckers, I found both shows to be too scripted and too short. The shows that they are modeling themselves after like “Rides, Unique Whips, and Pimp My Ride, are all 1 hour shows and the initial time with the target is not pre planned and rehearsed. Just sayin,,,
I saw my first episode yesterday and really wanted to see another one before I actually commented, but yeah, it went way too fast and they went over any useful information too fast and not enough detail.
And the “style consultant” gave the guy a haircut and shaved his beard. Talk about a no-brainer! I’d like to see how they dress some of these guys walking around in sweats and flip-flops. And if they stick with the advice.
Only thing which work for me lately is plain running. I park in remote rest areas (truck stops air is filled with harmfull smoke) and run till I’m tired. After hard first 2-3 weeks (I felt like I’m dying after really short run, i.e. 5 times around the truck) now it’s a source of real pleasure, my muscles are coming back, I feel “jumpy” like 20 years ago and… slightly put on weight, because muscles are heavier then fat (as my doctor explained to me)
