Yesterday as I watching the Inauguration of the 44th president of the USA, the candidate I voted for, I kept looking for signs that CHANGE had arrived. I watched and listened for more than eight hours. I kept looking for evidence that CHANGE had come. And I kept seeing opportunities for CHANGE pass right by.

The first opportunity I noticed was the separation of church and state. Several opportunities were missed in this department. I want my presidents sworn in legally, I don’t want to hear what preachers and priests have to say about it, and I’d just as soon the president-elect’s hand be placed on a copy of Winnie-the-Pooh as on a religious book. I don’t care to know the religious preference of the president nor should my religious preference matter. In Obama’s Inaugural speech when religions were being referred to, my religion was not mentioned, even though it is one of the oldest of the major religions on the planet right now.

I want my president and spouse to walk most of the parade route instead of ride most of it in a limousine with tinted windows. Millions of people travelled thousands of miles to watch a limousine pass by? I don’t think so!

I want fiscal responsibility to be shown in as many areas as possible. I want all the clothing for the Inauguration events to be purchased at Goodwill. And I want the newscasters to make a big deal about it. I want the Inaugural luncheon to be paid for by the attendees.

I want only one Inaugural ball, it should have a local musical group performing, with tickets given out by a lottery drawing. Admission charge on a donation basis, put your money in the jar by the door. President gets back to the White House by midnight, just like Cinderella.

I want funds for increased security for Washington DC on Inauguration Day to be raised during the campaigns themselves. Both candidates would contribute equal amounts from their political campaign contributions into a fund, to cover security and other crowd control expenses caused by Inauguration Day.

I do not want to continue to foot the bill for a free ride home on Air Force One for the outgoing President. We don’t send Air Force One to pick up the president-elect, do we? I think we could pay for a taxi to the Washington DC airport on Inauguration Day as a small courtesy.

How about you? What other ideas do you have that could have made Obama’s Inauguration Day the first day of CHANGE?
